The Ice Fortress: How a Severed Donkey Ear Repelled an Army
443 AD | Northern Wei · Sima Chuzhi
📌 A Strange Clue
In 443 AD, Emperor Taiwu of Northern Wei launched a campaign against the Rouran nomads. He ordered the shrewd general Sima Chuzhi to oversee grain supplies. One morning, a soldier reported that a pack donkey had one of its ears cut off. Everyone thought it was a petty thief's prank.
⚡ Brilliant Deduction
Sima Chuzhi, however, turned pale: "This is a scout's mark from the Rouran! They have infiltrated our camp to burn the supplies." He immediately ordered his men to cut branches, pile them around the supplies, and pour water over them. It was the dead of winter, and the water froze quickly, turning the branches into a solid wall of ice — an "ice fortress" erected in a single night.
❄️ The Rouran's Frustration
When the Rouran raiders arrived, they found it impossible to approach the slippery ice barrier, let alone set it on fire. They could only stare at the supplies in dismay and eventually retreated. Sima Chuzhi's ingenuity saved the army's lifeline.
📖 Historical Note: Sima Chuzhi was originally a descendant of the Eastern Jin imperial house. After fleeing to Northern Wei due to political strife, he rose through his talent to become a famous general. "Counting by severed ears" was a common tactic used by assassins at the time; Sima saw the clue and created the "ice fortress" miracle.
